Case Types Mediated at OMC

Adoption Mediation

Adoption mediation refers to a process for mediating a Post Adoption Contact Agreement (PACA). This is an agreement between the birth parents and prospective adoptive parents that allows for contact between a child’s adoptive family and members of the child’s birth family after the adoption has been finalized. Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process facilitated by specially trained and experienced mediators. The mediators help parties explore and consider different types of contact that support the safety and best interests of the child. The mediators do not make decisions for the parties nor do the mediators give legal advice or psychological counseling.

Bullying Issues Mediation Program

Realistic Child Focused Solutions

It can be difficult for schools and families to have conversations around such a sensitive and emotional subject as bullying. Mediation provides a neutral environment that is conducive to dialogue that helps build parent-school relationships. It can help create a plan that is a springboard to improving a child’s school experience which may extend far beyond school.

What is the Bullying Issues Mediation Program?

Bullying Issues Mediation Program is a partnership between Oakland Mediation Center and Beaumont Children’s Hospital’s NoBLE (No Bullying Live Empowered) Program to offer a mediation service, integrated with a bullying issues specialist, to provide realistic child focused solutions. It is a resource for parents and schools to facilitate productive conversations around the difficult issue of bullying.

Dealing with decisions surrounding parenting time with your children can be complicated, overwhelming, and stressful. Where litigation often tears families apart, mediation works to maintain and improve relationships through communication.

Probate Mediation

Dealing with decisions about personal or financial needs of a vulnerable person can be complicated and stressful. Family members may feel overwhelmed by juggling the needs of an adult, minor child, or disabled relative. With the added needs of children or career demands, family members may feel they have no other options but to petition the court for guardianship or conservatorship. At the same time, the person over whom guardianship is sought, may feel threatened or betrayed because he/she stands to lose the right to make basic life decisions. Mediation may be the right alternative to help you reach a resolution. Mediation gives families a chance to discuss their concerns, explore options, and find solutions to issues involving:

  • Child Probate Matters
  • Permanency Planning/Child Protection Mediation
  • Adult Probate Matters
  • Probate Matters For Individuals With a Disability

Special Education Mediation Program

Communication is an important aspect of educational planning for infants through young adults (age birth to 26) with special needs. Your ability as a parent, educator, or service provider to communicate productively when creating an Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP) or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) can affect the quality of a young person’s development and education. OMC offers Special Education Mediation Services and IFSP, IEPT and Resolution Meeting Facilitation.

Truancy Mediation

Truancy is the first sign that a student is in trouble at home and at school and is the most powerful predictor of juvenile delinquency. Our program uses mediation to reduce school truancy. The mediation session focuses on sharing state and local school attendance requirements, pinpointing underlying causes for non-attendance early on and setting up a plan to improve attendance.

Victim/Offender Mediation

Restorative Mediation allows parties affected by crime to have a say in what happens in the aftermath. It provides a peaceful alternative to taking out a warrant and going through the judicial process or letting conflict escalate at home, school, work or in the community. Mediation focuses on restoring losses of individual victims of crime; recognizes the need to restore offenders to “right relationships” with individuals and community; recognizes that offenders must be given opportunities to right wrongs and redeem themselves in their own eyes and the eyes of community. Mediation asks “what’s happening and how can the problem be fixed?”

Employment Mediation

Is conflict in your organization costing you time and money? Does it lead to grievances and legal actions? Does it cause stress for employees and management? Consider mediation as an alternative.
